The Singapore Grand Prix, the 18th round of the 2025 Formula 1 season, takes place from October 3 to 5 at the Marina Bay circuit. Drivers and teams face the urban track for the first time in October, raising temperatures and humidity to record levels. The race kicks off the non-European leg, with the main event scheduled for Sunday at 9 AM Brasília time.

Lando Norris, from McLaren, arrives as the favorite after dominating the 2024 edition with an end-to-end victory. Max Verstappen, championship leader for Red Bull, aims to repeat last year’s podium and pressure his rival. The event draws attention for its 62 laps on a 4.94 km winding track.

Technical track demands precise setup

The Marina Bay circuit features 19 corners and four DRS zones, favoring overtakes at strategic points. Teams adjust cars for maximum downforce, similar to Monaco, but with brakes under high demand due to intense braking zones. Recent changes in the final sector reduced bumps, easing low car setups.

Drivers report significant physical strain due to heat, which may exceed 32°C with humidity above 70%. In 2024, the safety car appeared in 100% of races, a recurring record due to frequent incidents near barriers.

Victory history solidifies dominance

Singapore joined the F1 calendar in 2008 as the first night race in history. Sebastian Vettel holds the record with five wins between 2010 and 2015 for Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton has four victories, including 2018, when he overtook Vettel on the final lap.

The track saw decisive moments, like Nico Rosberg’s engine failure in 2015, which handed Hamilton the title early. In 2023, Carlos Sainz of Ferrari claimed his first pole and win in the category.

Last year, Norris built a 20-second lead over Verstappen at the start, controlling the pace with C3, C4, and C5 tires available.

Team preparations for October

McLaren tests aerodynamic upgrades to maintain an edge in low-speed corners. Verstappen focuses on qualifying, where his fast lap offset car limitations in 2024. Ferrari refines tire management after warm-up struggles last year.

Engineers predict October’s extra heat will accelerate tire degradation, forcing multiple stops. Pit stop strategies vary between one and two changes, depending on traffic.

Tire highlights and overtaking zones

Pirelli’s C3, C4, and C5 tires handle Marina Bay’s smooth asphalt, but heat speeds up sidewall wear. Teams calibrate pressures to avoid blistering, a common issue in humid nights.

The four DRS zones include detection after turn 5 and between turns 14 and 16. This setup enabled 45 overtakes in 2024.

Climatic challenges shift dynamics

October’s temperature rise turns the race into an endurance test for drivers and mechanics. Humidity above 70% causes rapid fatigue, with constant hydration in cockpits. Past editions saw concentration errors in final laps due to this.

Teams install extra cooling systems in the pits to mitigate aerodynamic pressure losses. Verstappen noted that the climate affects car balance, requiring real-time adjustments during free practice.

The track’s aggressive kerbs punish low suspensions, forcing trade-offs between speed and stability. History shows 12 safety cars in 16 editions, reinforcing defensive tactics.

Broadcast and event access

Band airs the race live on free-to-air TV, with Bandsports covering practice and qualifying. Platforms like BandPlay and F1TV offer streaming for international fans. In Brazil, ge.globo provides real-time coverage via app and website.

Tickets sold out quickly, with over 250,000 spectators expected across the three days. The event includes music shows and sponsor activations around Marina Bay.

Favorites and recent stats

Lando Norris leads pole stats in Singapore over the last three years, with a 1:29.525 time in 2024. Verstappen has three consecutive podiums, including the fastest lap in 2023. Oscar Piastri, Norris’ teammate, recovered positions in 2024 for third place.

McLaren won the last two editions, totaling 150 points on the track. Red Bull seeks a comeback, with Verstappen 52 points ahead in the overall championship.
