Authorities’ reaction to the confusion
Federal and UN authorities met shortly after the incident to evaluate security protocols. The extraordinary secretary of COP30, Valter Correia, highlighted that appropriate measures were adopted to avoid repetitions.
Medical teams treated the injured at the scene, with injuries classified as minor. The entry of night workers into the pavilion was postponed for 30 minutes.
The UN spokesperson reported that the place returned to normal in less than an hour. Internal investigations continue to identify those involved.
Path and composition of the previous march
The isolated action followed the Global Health and Climate March, which brought together around 3 thousand participants on a 1.5 km route. The route started on Avenida Duque de Caxias and ended at Parque da Cidade, headquarters of COP30.
Doctors, nurses and indigenous leaders called for climate-related public health policies. The organization denied links to the invading group, stating compliance with previous agreements.
The main event took place peacefully, with speeches about environmental impacts on health. Participants dispersed without incident before the riot in the blue zone.
Clarifications from march organizers
Those responsible for the Global Health and Climate March issued a note distancing themselves from the episode in the blue zone. They reinforced that the main event respected defined routes and dialogues with the conference organization.
The demonstration focused on demands for climate financing and protection of traditional territories. Around 80% of participants were healthcare professionals and students.
- Approved route included stops for short speeches at key points.
- Security agreements guaranteed a minimum distance of 50 meters from the blue zone.
- Final note emphasized commitment to non-violent actions.
Enhanced security measures on site
The doors to the blue zone received improvised barricades with tables and equipment after the confrontation. UN agents have increased internal and external patrols in the main pavilion.
The temporary evacuation only affected the access lobby, with no impact on ongoing sessions. Camera monitoring captured images for later analysis.
Military Police reinforcements were positioned at strategic points around the park. The incident did not change the negotiation agenda for thenext day.
COP30 continues with a focus on energy transition, despite the isolated episode. Delegations from more than 190 countries maintain an original debate schedule.
Context of the protesters’ demands
Tupinambá and Tapajó indigenous people led the invading group, protesting against drilling at the mouth of the Amazon. They alleged exclusion of traditional voices in climate discussions.
Student activists gathered with banners for the taxation of fortunes and the end of fossil subsidies. The advance stopped 20 meters from the plenary rooms, preventing access to sensitive documents.
The episode highlights tensions between social movements and the formal structures of the conference. Observers note that parallel protests occur daily on the outer perimeter.
Post-incident operational adjustments
Night workers came in with additional security sweeps, delaying equipment assembly for 45 minutes. Maintenance crews repaired door damage until 10 p.m.
The UN revised accreditations for the following day, prioritizing electronic verifications. No delegates reported direct threats during the blockade.
The pavilion fully reopened at 8pm, allowing night events to continue. Preliminary reports indicate minimal repair costs, below R$5,000.
